How Much PM Is Enough For Survival
I have seen references on survivalblog to have at least $1,000 face value of silver on hand for each member of a family unit for survival purposes. That seems high to me, especially when considering each member of a family. Any recommendations or strategies for how much gold or silver to have on hand for survival purposes?

Re: How Much PM Is Enough For Survival
You can never have enough.......
Just dollar coast average your way in ...keep buying up , down, sideways... dont have to break the bank, what ever you can afford to part with.( sometimes I pickup as littel and 20 dollars worth of mercury dimes) So when the time every comes you can "spilt the pie" according to the stash present. Buy till you cant afford it ....... or cant find it. T |

Re: How Much PM Is Enough For Survival
Zero.... until you have food, water, weapons/ammo to last you at least a year.....or a lot longer.
Then whatever you feel comfortable with.....there is no magic formula as nobody could include all the factors and variables for each individual, family, situation in life, and so on.......and anybody that says otherwise would cause me to question anything else they advise. Welcome to GIM. You have a lot to read. :D |

Re: How Much PM Is Enough For Survival
Our old friend Hypertiger recommended that you should be able to live without income for at least a year. He also said if someone had 100k, they should put 50k into silver.

I totally agree with Andy. I did things backwards. I bought PM's first, then firearms and ammo. Then I realized that if things really break down that PMs will be worth much less than food, water, and firearms during the intial recovery period. Luckily I had time to recover an start building a pantry. I see my pantry as: Food insurance for economic or banking failure Food insurance for a job layoff Food insurance against inflation :D |
Re: How Much PM Is Enough For Survival
Thank you for the welcome. New to this forum, but no survival newb here.
Beans -- Done. In fact, if TSHTF, I could be self sufficient in perpetuity, barring an extremely prolonged drought or some other natural disaster. Water, fruit trees, heirloom seeds, and farm animals go a long way to being able to sustain life for long periods. Bullets -- way more than done. But, I have been thinking of getting an AR-15 to plink with. It looks like one can buy .223 ammunition through the CMP at very affordable prices, especially when compared to the .308 ammo I have been shooting. However, if TSHTF, I like the .308. Bullion -- which brings me to my original question, and thank you for the responses. It seems to me that there ought to be some realistic goal, which once attained, one would be better served by putting that money elsewhere. Perhaps more firearms, or more variety in your food stores, or (perhaps anathema to the members of this forum) invest in the stock market. I like the responses indicating enough to live on for certain periods of time. That makes sense. But, at the same time, that would seem to be much more than $1,000 face. Yet, if TSHTF, that silver or gold might go a lot farther than when TS has not HTF. |
